Korean sports stars shine in European football and American baseball Updated: 2019-12-30 15:54:00 KST

2019 was a memorable one for Korean sports fans.
The nation's two biggest stars shined in their respective professional fields - Son Heung-min in the English Premier League and Ryu Hyun-jin in Major League Baseball.
Playing for Tottenham Hotspur Son set a new record for most goals scored by a South Korean footballer in the European league, surpassing Cha Bum-kun's previous record of 121 goals.
Earlier this month, he became the top Asian finisher in the Ballon d'Or voting -- an annual award given to the world's best football player.
Son came in 22nd place out of 30 nominees.
He was also named Tottenham Hotspur's 2019 MVP by CIES Football Observatory.
The research group rated Son as the player who had the biggest influence on the team's results.

In Major League Baseball, the Korean Monster, Ryu Hyun-jin, has recently signed a four-year contract worth 80 million U.S. dollars with the Toronto Blue Jays -- the biggest deal ever for a South Korean pitcher.
This came after his monstrous 2018-2019 campaign with the LA Dodgers.
Ryu led both the American and National leagues with an ERA of 2.3-2.
He stands as the only Asian player to achieve that feat.
The Korean left-hander earned his first all-star selection… and became the starting pitcher for the National League.
Ryu was also the runner-up for the National League's Cy Young Award -- an annual honor given to the best pitcher of the regular season.
In the process, he became the first Asian to receive a first place vote.
