Popularity of small, easy-to-eat fresh produce on the rise in S. Korea Updated: 2019-09-03 07:25:56 KST

For the past four years, this grape farm has been growing a different species of grapes and has had great success with it.
Seedless and very sweet, Shine Muscat are green grapes that you can eat without peeling.
A carefully wrapped bunch costs around 12 to 17 U.S. dollars, …which is six times the price of the grapes the farm previously grew.

"The consumer response has been really good and we've been reaping profits many times larger than with the previous species of grapes."

The newly bred Ruby S Apple, or mini apple, is a bit bigger than a ping-pong ball.
And the delicious tennis-ball sized Whangkeumbae pear can be eaten without peeling.
From apple watermelons to mini cabbages and mini paprikas, downsized fresh produce is popular among small families.

"By eating fruits without peeling them, you can consume healthy compounds like polyphenols. This is an easy way to consume more functional materials from fruits."

The newly bred fruits and vegetables are expected to continue satisfying the needs of consumers while increasing farm profits.
