The U.S. believes South Korea's drills in the East Sea to defend its easternmost Dokdo islets are "unhelpful" in solving the ongoing Seoul-Tokyo dispute.
According to Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency, an anonymous U.S. State Department official said the sovereignty of the islets are for South Korea and Japan to resolve peacefully.
Saying how the timing, messaging, and increased scale of the military drills at Dokdo were NOT productive. the official said, however, that Washington does not take a position in the territorial dispute between the two countries.
Earlier this week,. South Korea held a large-scale two-day military exercise to defend its territories in the East Sea, including the Dokdo islets.
In response, Japan made false claims to Dokdo and requested Seoul to suspend the drills.
