S. Korea rejects Japan's request to stop Dokdo defense exercise Updated: 2019-08-25 14:17:03 KST

The Japanese government has asked South Korea to suspend its Dokdo defense drill on Sunday, claiming ownership over the islets.
Seoul's foreign ministry turned down the request, saying that Dokdo Island is and has always been Korea's sovereign territory.
The island in question was taken over by Japan as part of its oppressive colonization of Korea.
While the islet was rightfully restored to Korea in the 1950s, Tokyo maintains that Dokdo is Japanese territory and has criticized the biannual military exercises since early 1990s.
