Meanwhile, the U.S. could ask to form a coalition with other countries to protect waters near the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
At a briefing led by the U.S. state and defense departments Friday, officials told reporters about a new initiative to promote freedom of navigation and maritime security in the strait.
Delegations from around 60 countries participated in the briefing, including Korean embassy officials in the U.S.
Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump said that an American navy vessel destroyed an Iranian drone closing in on the ship.
Meanwhile, Iran said it had seized a foreign oil tanker which it claimed was carrying million liters of smuggled fuel.
