Japan is causing ties with South Korea to deteriorate further, again claiming sovereignty over Korea's easternmost Dokdo islets, which Japan calls Takeshima.
Japan's Kyodo News Agency reports that Japan's Minister of State for Ocean Policy, Jun Matsumoto told reporters that sovereignty over Dokdo belongs to Japan on the basis of historical facts and international law.
Matsumoto's comments came as he was responding to a question about Korea's annual military drill held to defend Dokdo.
The drill is held twice a year and is based on the simulation of an external threat.
It kicked off Thursday for two days -- the first such drill under the new Moon administration.
