Peace and Prosperity Ep.45
▶ Where does S. Korea-U.S. alliance stand today?

In a recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary Mark Esper urged Seoul to contribute more to defense costs. The U.S. also warned it will send furlough notices to some 9,000 South Koreans at U.S. bases in the South if the two countries fail to reach a new defense cost-sharing deal. Meanwhile, South Korea decided to independently dispatch troops to the Strait of Hormuz, following months of U.S. pressure to join a U.S.-led international coalition to defend the strait from Iranian threats. What impact will Seoul’s deployment decision have on the South Korea-U.S. alliance and the cost-sharing talks?
To break down the latest developments, we are joined by Lee Seong-hyon, Research Fellow at the Sejong Institute. To broaden the perspective, we also connect with guest experts on Skype, including Olivia Enos, Senior Policy Analyst at the Heritage Foundation and Lawrence Rubin, Associate Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
