Japan’s effort to host the Tokyo Olympics despite the prolonging COVID-19 pandemic is facing various challenges. The most recent dispute, which resulted in a new conflict between S. Korea and Japan, has emerged over a map displayed on the Tokyo Olympics website, which illustrates Dokdo as part of Japan’s territory. The S. Korean government has strongly criticized Tokyo for its wrong claims over the islets and called on the organizers to remove them from the map. The organizers continue to reject Seoul’s request to revise its map. As the International Olympic Committee, which should promote political neutrality and actively oversee the dispute, remains silent over this issue, calls for an Olympics boycott are sparking across S. Korea. We invite analysts and experts to discuss how the latest development surrounding the two nations will affect the bilateral relationship.
