Episode 78 S. Korea conditionally extends GSOMIA. Where does Seoul-Tokyo relationship go from here?

South Korea said it would conditionally extend GSOMIA, a military intel-sharing pact signed with Japan on November 22nd. After being signed by the two nations in 2016, the pact allowed Seoul and Tokyo to exchange sensitive military information. The agreement was designed to be renewed each year, but with Japan triggering trade spat with South Korea by placing export curbs, Seoul announced on April 23rd not to extend GSOMIA. Thawing of the frayed bilateral ties was expected with Seoul’s announcement on its conditional GSOMIA extension. Still, a fresh spat has occurred between the two sides, with Japan being accused of making false comments about the talks it had with South Korea on GSOMIA.

While making the GSOMIA announcement, the Korean government also added it would halt pursuing WTO complaint over Japan’s trade curbs. However, it also emphasized it could terminate the military info-sharing pact and continue pursuing the dispute settlement if Japan isn’t willing to resolve the spat through dialogue.
