This year marks the 30th anniversary of South Korea-ASEAN ties. The Point paid a special visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a discussion with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha on the history and the future of South Korea-ASEAN relations. South Korea has established its ties with the ASEAN members for the first time in 1989, and they have been forming a strategic partnership since 2010. Since President Moon Jae-in unveiled the New Southern Policy in November 2017, South Korea and ASEAN nations have started enhancing bilateral cooperation. As a result, ASEAN emerged as Korea's second-biggest partners in trade, investment, and construction as well as the no.1 destination for Korean travelers.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with ASEAN, S. Korea is preparing to host the 2019 ASEAN-Republic of KOREA Commemorative Summit and the 1st Mekong-Republic of KOREA Summit in Busan. The world is focusing its attention on the meeting between the leaders of South Korea and ASEAN.
