Episode 55 Oil tanker attacks near Hormuz Strait

Connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the Strait of Hormuz is regarded as the world’s single most crucial oil passageway where 1/3 of all the world’s oil shipments are carried out. On June 13th, an unidentified attack has damaged two oil tankers near the area, and the U.S. has blamed Iran for carrying out the attacks. One of the vessels damaged from the attack turns out to be a ship loaned by a Japanese company, and it has left entire Japan in shock, as its leader Prime Minister Abe was visiting Tehran at the time to meet with Iranian counterpart. The Point takes a closer look at the reason and history behind the seldom-rising tension in the Middle East and asks a local expert for insights on how Japan is responding to the incident. Lastly, we will talk with an expert to find out how other countries might react to a possible oil price hike, and what kind of impact would the attack have on South Korea.
Other topics to be covered include the U.S.-India trade war, the Hungarian court’s decision to release detained cruise captain on bail, and the first mass at Notre Dame Cathedral after the horrific flame.
