▶[National Liberation Day Special]-- The Future of Korea-Japan Relations

This August 15th marks the 73rd anniversary of Korea's National Liberation Day. Even after gaining independence in 1945 after Japan's decades-long colonial rule, Korea has maintained an icy relation with Japan with contentious issues like comfort women and Dokdo still unresolved.
But as talks of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula is growing, an increasing number of people are calling for the reconciliation between the two countries.
Why is it so hard to resolve these historically contentious issues and to what extent do Korean and Japanese people distrust each other? We sit down with Professor Park Cheol-hee from Seoul National University to discuss factors that could worsen Korea-Japan relations and we also connect with Professor Nakato Sachio from Ritsumeikan University and Dr. Masashi Nishihara from the Research Institute for Peace and Security to hear about the importance of improving bilateral relations in the midst of the rapidly changing dynamics in Northeast Asia.
Lastly, we suggest possible directions to improving relations between Korea and Japan as partners and a friend.
