Along with the emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and 5G, which are the core of the fourth industrial revolution, autonomous vehicle has recently garnered a lot of attention in the domestic market. A lot of researches have been promoted in the related fields and the related technologies have also been developed. To what extent has the technology for autonomous vehicle been developed? Object recognition is one of the most important technologies for autonomous vehicles. And a lot of domestic companies have focused on developing technologies for LiDAR sensor, which is the core element for the object recognition. Thanks to the development of a LiDAR sensor, it is possible to distinguish different conditions of the surrounding environment including snow, rain and fog. And deep learning is another technology that can contribute to the development of autonomous vehicles. The images recognized by the camera can be processed and the vehicle can be controlled independently based on the software. Moreover, a camera for autonomous vehicles has been developed and it can recognize and create a detailed map with precise information. The camera for autonomous vehicles can show higher level of performances than the existing map based on the GPS. We explore the ongoing development of cutting-edge technologies for autonomous vehicles.
The modern society has faced rapid urbanization and the increasing amount of traffic. ITS, or Intelligent Transport System, which provides a safe and effective transportation system for the safety of people, has emerged as a solution. And it has brought about a significant paradigm shift to the industry. A national traffic information center which has played a role as a guide for the national traffic conditions 365 days a year, has recently been changed along with the application of advanced technologies. Aside from the management of traffic conditions including the cases of emergency like traffic accidents and disasters, it alerts people about a traffic jam and suggests an alternate route with less traffic by analyzing the real-time traffic conditions. A tunnel traffic management system has also been introduced in order to reduce the increasing number of traffic accidents that occur in tunnels. By applying the deep learning technology, a vehicle detection system can recognize the unexpected situations in real time and prevent the additional accidents as well. The local government has installed parking equipment and implemented a system that can pay the parking fee by scanning a QR code with a smartphone. It is to provide a convenient parking space for local residents. We look into ITS, which has been applied to cars, roads and parking systems and emerged as a new growth engine for the domestic transportation system.
Free Economic zones have been designated to promote autonomous economic activities of companies and attract investment. Yellow Sea Free Economic Zone has been built in the Yellow Sea region, with Pyeongtaek port as the center. It has risen as a future growth engine, along with the establishment of optimal infrastructure for various industries. It consists of two major districts and clusters for high-tech industries like automobile and display have also been established. Pyeongtaek BIX, or Business and Industry Complex, which has grown as a high-tech industrial cluster as well as Hyeondeok district, which is a service industrial complex for distribution and tourism are the major districts of the free economic zone. Pyeongtaek port, which is one of the country's top three trading ports, is the significant contributing factor to the growth of the Yellow Sea Free Economic Zone as a hub of Northeast Asia. As it is located in the metropolitan area, rapid inland transportation is possible and the time and distribution cost can be reduced as well. Moreover, the port provides the most direct route to China and it can play a significant role that connects Southeast Asian countries and Japan. A lot of domestic and global companies have promoted economic activities in Pyeongtaek BIX. It is because of the geographical characteristics of the region which has optimal conditions for import and export. Yellow Sea Free Economic Zone Authority has recently signed contracts with a domestic company who develops major technologies for the economic growth as well as a maker of semiconductor parts from Singapore in order to attract investment. We introduce Yellow Sea Free Economic Zone, which has risen as a new economic center.
