Foreign Correspondents Ep.245
One year after Hong Kong’s national security law

June 30 marked the one-year anniversary of the imposition of Hong Kong’s national security law. Over the past year, 114 people have been arrested under the security law, and 61 of them have been prosecuted. Local media outlets have shut down due to growing political pressure, including Apple Daily, the city’s most outspoken pro-democracy newspaper. Hong Kong’s legislature has passed a bill amending electoral laws to ensure potential candidates for public office are "patriotic." Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed Beijing’s “comprehensive jurisdiction” over Hong Kong and Macau under the national security law, in a speech marking the centenary of the Chinese Communist Party. While the law is widely seen as a major step back for democracy, some argue that it has restored order and stability in the city. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss how the security law has changed Hong Kong over the past year.
