Foreign Correspondents Ep.223
Diplomatic game in Northeast Asia

Officials in the Biden administration have indicated a continuation of the U.S. tough stance on China. On the contrary, the U.S. and Russia agreed to extend the New START nuclear treaty in a move some believe may signal an improvement in strained U.S.-Russia relations. However, there are still many contentious issues that remain to be resolved between the two countries, including Russia’s alleged interference in the 2020 U.S. election and the poisoning of Putin’s opposition figure Alexei Navalny. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken held phone calls with South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers, where he called for greater trilateral cooperation among Washington, Seoul and Tokyo. Meanwhile, prior to his phone call with Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping called South Korean President Moon Jae-in, vowing to strengthen cooperation with South Korea. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss how key regional players in Northeast Asia are shaping their foreign policy strategies in response to a Biden presidency.
