Foreign Correspondents Ep.201
S. Korean churches emerge as new COVID-19 hotspots

Churches in the greater Seoul area have emerged as a major source of cluster infections in Korea. There are now more than 1,000 confirmed cases linked to the Sarang Jeil Church, which organized mass rallies at Gwanghwamun Square over the Liberation Day weekend. In a meeting at the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae last week, President Moon Jae-in and the leaders of Protestant churches only confirmed their differences over a ban on in-person worship services and the freedom of religion. Moon urged the leaders to cooperate with the latest infection control measures, but the United Christian Churches of Korea opposed to restrictions on indoor services, saying religious freedom cannot be compromised at any cost. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to delve into how the two sides can find middle ground.
