The long awaited brexit has finally taken place. At 11 p.m. on Jan. 31, local time, Britain left the EU. Britain’s brexit divorce comes three years and seven months after the British public voted to leave the bloc. Among the reasons behind Britain's departure from the EU were the UK’s increasing financial contributions to the EU and a growing negative view on migrants pouring into Europe. Although brexit has been realized, Britain and the EU still need to go through a "transition period" to negotiate future bilateral ties by the end of the year. If Britain and the EU fail to sign a free trade agreement within this period, it will result in the so-called “no-deal brexit.”
This week, Foreign Correspondents looks at the causes and aftermath of brexit.
