Foreign Correspondents Ep.147 - South Korea-Japan trade tensions
Trade tensions erupt between South Korea and Japan
following the Tokyo government's new export restrictions

The Japanese government has announced economic sanctions measures on South Korea. Tokyo announced on July 1 that it was introducing new export curbs on three semiconductor materials, namely fluorinated polyimides, photoresists, and hydrogen fluoride. The Seoul government says the measures are retaliatory in nature, linked to a South Korean Supreme Court ruling in October, 2018 that ordered Japanese firms to compensate Korean victims of forced labor during World War II. South Korea also raised the issue of Japan's new export restrictions at a WTO meeting, while dispatching a top presidential aide to Washington to seek U.S. mediation on the matter. Meanwhile, boycott movements have also broken out in South Korea, with activist groups encouraging citizens not to purchase Japanese products. In this week's edition of 'Foreign Correspondents', we sit down with our panel of journalists to talk more about Japan's latest export curbs on South Korea, the subsequent fallout and how the Seoul government should respond to this crisis.
