Foreign Correspondents Ep. 114 - Should South Korea hire more public servants?
From the South Korean government's plan to hire more civil servants and the preference to work in the public sector
President Moon Jae-in's plan to boost employment in the public sector is facing opposition in the National Assembly. The finance ministry's 2019 budget proposal announced on Aug. 8 includes a plan for the hiring of 174,000 additional workers in the public sector by the year 2022. While the ruling party argues that it will add momentum to the country's labor market and improve the quality of government services, opposition lawmakers have countered that it's a money drain and that job creation should be left in the hands of the private sector. Civil service jobs are highly sought after in South Korea, with an estimated 440,000 people studying for the national service exams. Many respondents said high job security was the main reason for their pursuit of work in the public sector, and similar sentiments have also been seen in countries abroad like China, India, France and Germany. So how are public servants hired in these countries, and how is civil service generally perceived? In this week's edition of "Foreign Correspondents", we discuss all of these issues and more.
