Foreign Correspondents Ep.80 - The inter-Korean summit and regional powers
The four regional powers' view of the inter-Korean summit
Four regional powers, namely the United States, China, Japan and Russia, have set their sights on the Korean Peninsula ahead of the inter-Korean summit. Washington has reacted positively to the Moon-Kim meeting, which is likely to set the tone for the later Trump-Kim summit. Japan however, has been caught in a bind, seemingly anxious of being the odd man in the political developments surrounding the Korean Peninsula. Russia and China have both welcomed the move, with possible changes to Moscow and Beijing's North Korea policy in view, after Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin successfully secured their long-term future as leaders of their respective nations. Regional powers are watching the two Koreas closely, but each with a different view based on divergent national interests.
Future high-level meetings after the Moon-Kim summit
With the inter-Korean and Washington-Pyongyang summits likely to bring about considerable changes to the Korean Peninsula, more high-level meetings are expected to take place in the future. In a surprising development, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un traveled from Pyongyang to Beijing by train to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. Meeting Xi for the first time since taking power, Kim is alleged to have discussed North Korea's denuclearization, according to media reports. Meanwhile, Seoul's government is expecting a string of summits between North Korea and other regional powers to take place in the coming months. Even Japan, which has insisted on a hardline stance to be maintained regarding North Korea, is also seeking top-level meeting between Pyongyang and Tokyo. In this week's edition of "Foreign Correspondents", we take a look at how each country in the region with interests at stake on the Korean Peninsula is reacting to the latest developments, and discuss the possibility of follow-up summits between these nations and North Korea.
