On January 20th, 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump was inaugurated into the Oval Office. President Trump has steadily and boldly pushed forward with his "America First" policy over the past year. Mr. Trump, who has emphasized job creation and balanced trade as his top priorities, made remarkable achievements in the economic sphere. In 2017, the Dow Jones industrial Average rose more than 25%, while the U.S. unemployment rate saw a steady decline. However, many controversies have marred his immigration and foreign policies. Regarding diplomacy in particular, nerves have been rattled by his withdrawal from multilateral diplomacy, pulling out of the Paris Climate Treaty, the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, and UNESCO. In this edition of Foreign Correspondents, we talk to our panel of foreign journalists on Trump's policies and actions during his first year in office.
Trump's political style
President Trump active use of social media to provide updates on his policies, schedules, personal opinions defines his unique style of communication political philosophy. Trump says he is using social media as a means to fight the "unfair" media, and has uploaded more than 2500 tweets since his inauguration. In addition, his crude and aggressive language is another hallmark of President Trump's unique political style, labeling North Korean leader Kim Jong-un a "rocket man", and "a sick puppy dog", while calling Pope Francis a "great guy."
