2017 was an eventful year in news from all different aspects. We look back on the year 2017, focusing on three news keyword that have been talked about most in the media.
The first news keyword in 2017,... presidential election! On May 9th, Korea saw an early election take place. Originally scheduled for December 20th, the nation's first ever impeachment of a sitting president took place and the election was rescheduled fir an earlier date. On May 10th, Democratic Party of Korea candidate Moon Jae-in was elected into office as the nation's 19th president.
'North Korean provocations', one of the hottest topic in world news, is our second keyword. This year alone, North Korea conducted 10 missile tests and on September 3rd, North Korea also carried out its 6th nuclear test. With repeated provocations from North Korea, the international community voiced strong demands for sanctions and pressure.
The third news keyword for 2017 is the 'Pohang earthquake'. On November 15, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred in Pohang, in the southeastern region of Korea, sending the nation into a state of shock and panic. The widely-held notion that the Korean Peninsula was an earthquake-free zone was shattered as a result. In the aftermath of the earthquake, the College Scholastic Ability Test was postponed for the first time.
We now take a look back at the world of news in the year 2017, with a focus on these three keywords.
