4 Angles Ep.188
Old Future – Smilthy
Smithies produce farming tools, such as hoes, sickles, and pickaxes. They were essential in Korea up until the 1970's when the country was an agricultural society, but they gradually disappeared as inexpensive mass-produced tools became available. Now there are only a few smithies left in Seoul, and Smith Brothers, run by Blacksmith Ryu Sang-joon, is one of those rarities. Armed with half a century of experience under his belt, he breathes new life into cast iron to create one and only, handmade products. Take a glimpse at the history and legacy of Smith Brothers.

Artist Joung Young-ju
Artist Joung Young-ju is gaining international recognition with her paintings of hillside villages that are disappearing these days due to rapid urban development. Her pieces are known for their warm-hearted sentiments, which are created by the material used – hanji, Korean traditional handmade paper. The artist adheres crumpled pieces of hanji to a canvas to depict roofs, gates and stairs and then paints in layers to create depth in the color. The hillside villages in Joung Young-ju's pieces are old, humble, yet full of warmth and love. Meet artist Joung Young-ju and her warm artistry.
