Musical "Matilda," based on a novel of the same name by Roald Dahl, has opened in Korea; it is Matilda's the first premiere in the non-English speaking world. One of the most popular musical productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), the show follows girl Matilda who fights through oppressive parents and school to find true happiness. Following its premiere in 2010, the show has traveled to West End, Broadway and a long list of major cities all around the world, winning more than 85 international awards and attracting 7 million people.
For all its international success, staging the show in Korea has been a journey of its own. The script had to be translated for the first time, and the audition for the role of Matilda attracted 600 applicants for just four places. INNERview meets Nik Ashton, Matilda's Worldwide Associate Director, to share his experience of the Korean musical scene and top tips for enjoying the show.
