Choi Bong-seok, the Master of Making Hangwa

The Lunar New Year's Day is one of the most important holidays celebrated in Korea, and one of the typical dishes served on the table is hangwa, Korean traditional confectionery. To celebrate the Lunar New Year, we visited Choi Bong-seok, who has been carrying on the legacy of Galgol Hangwa with 130 years of tradition. Galgol Hangwa has become a premium hangwa brand in Korea, as the products are made using the traditional method. Choi has been dedicated to maintaining the original flavor of traditional hangwa, and successfully became the first to export hangwa to the U.S.A. in 1992. In recognition of his contribution to preserving and promoting this tradition, he became the first hangwa-maker to be designated the Korea Food Master in 2000.

'The INNERview crew went to Hangwa Village in Gangneung to meet him. He gave us a tour of the experience and exhibition center that sheds light on the history and tradition of making hangwa. The center was actually founded by Choi to widely spread the hangwa culture. As the director of the center, he is committed to presenting traditional hangwa and promoting it at a global level.
