Thierry Coppens, the General Director of Médecins Sans Frontières Korea

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), known as Doctors Without Borders in English, is a medical humanitarian organization that provides emergency relief in areas affected by conflict, epidemics, famine, natural disasters and other life-threatening situations. MSF helps those in need of medical assistance, regardless of race, gender, religion or political orientation.

The INNERview crew went to the MSF Korea Office in Seoul to meet with Thierry Coppens, appointed as the second General Director of MSF Korea last July. Since its establishment in 2012, the office in Korea has been supporting international medical relief activities through its fundraising, PR and recruitment programs. About 30 MSF aid workers from Korea have been dispatched to work in the field around the world.

Thierry Coppens has been involved in medical relief activities in some 10 countries for the past 20 years. For instance, as the Head of Mission in Lebanon in 2013, he led the MSF team, based in Beirut, to provide the necessary medical assistance to Syrian and Palestinian refugees residing in Lebanon.

We also went to the screening of “Affliction,” a documentary film shedding light on MSF activities to fight against the Ebola virus in Africa. The recent Ebola epidemic left the entire world in fear, with a high mortality rate of 60%. Following the screening, the audience had a chance to speak with the MSF aid workers dispatched from Korea to Sierra Leone, where the highest mortality rate was recorded.

Tune in this week to meet Thierry Coppens from MSF Korea, responding to medical humanitarian emergencies and providing medical assistance to the medically vulnerable populations to save lives.
