The Queen of Pocket Billiards, Kim Ga-young

Kim Ga-young, nicknamed the Queen of Pocket Billiards in Korea, has won over 20 international championships and over 50 domestic championships. On top of that, she became the world champion in pocket billiards in 2004, 2006 and 2012.

She picked up a cue stick for the first time in grade 4 and began playing four-ball and three-cushion billiards. Then in her sophomore year in middle school, she switched to pocket billiards, or pool, where there were more competitive players. After practicing for just a couple of days, she went on to win her first pool competition.

After graduating from high school, she went straight to Taiwan to compete against her role model Liu Shin-mei, who was No. 1 in world rankings. She practiced day and day, spending her entire time at a billiards hall and sleeping only 4 hours a day. In just 6 months after arriving in Taiwan, she realized her dream of surpassing Liu Shin-mei.

Rather than falling complacent, she boarded a flight to the U.S. with bigger dreams. A year later, she placed second at the 2004 U.S. Open and won the world championship title in 2004, 2006 and 2012. With her international success, she has become the only pool player, among both male and female players, to receive the national athlete pension in Korea.

Upon returning to home soil in 2011, Kim Ga-young has been devoting her time to her professional career as well as her college studies, in hopes of becoming an excellent leader and instructor in her field. Join us on The INNERview to meet the Queen of Billiards and learn her story!
