Best-selling Korean-American writer, Helie Lee

Helie Lee caused a sensation in the U.S. with her best-selling non-fiction books, "Still Life with Rice" and "In the Absence of Sun," recounting her grandmother's life and the dangerous endeavor to help her uncle and his family defect from North Korea.

After immigrating to America at the age of 4, she studied Political Science at UCLA and worked at NBC and CBS as a producer. As a well-adapted Korean-American, she never attempted to learn about her heritage until one life-changing experience triggered her curiosity about her roots and family history. Becoming a published writer had never been part of her plan; she simply wanted to document her grandmother's life and journey and perhaps share it with her younger relatives.

She also filmed a documentary, "Macho Like Me," based on her experiment where she transformed into a man for 6 months, and turned it into a one-woman show to connect and communicate with the audience.

As an ambassador of Korean culture, Helie Lee founded the Korean Academy for Educators as an effort to provide accurate information on Korean history and culture to teachers in America as well as other parts of the world. On top of that, she is currently serving as the Director of CultureHub L.A. to create a bridge between Korea and America.

Tune into The INNERview to meet the best-selling Korean-American writer Helie Lee, who is "proud of [her] grandmother's blood flowing within her," and learn about her inspiring story.
