Able Art, the Cry for a World Without Borders



















Able Art is art that turns disabilities into different abilities. It began in Japan as a cultural movement of disabled artists to turn disabilities into new possibilities. They overcome their physical disabilities and the barricade of prejudice to send the world a message of hope! We learn more about disabled artists and the artistic value of their work.

"Heart-Heart Chamber Orchestra", World's first visually impaired orchestra
The world's first chamber orchestra made up of visually impaired musicians was formed in Korea in March, 2007. The Heart-Heart Chamber Orchestra is a very special orchestra of 12 visually impaired musicians. We join them for their special performance "Journey Together", commemorating the Family Month of May.

"Nalaga'at", the messengers of Able Art from Israel
"Nalaga'at" is an Israeli theatre group composed of severely disabled performers with visual and auditory disabilities. They came to Korea for a special performance. They set up an actual oven onstage and bake real bread as they perform. Although they can't see or hear, they coordinate their movements through the vibrations of music, to connect deeply with their audience.

Seok Chang-wu, Korea's first artist with prosthetic hands
Seok Chang-wu is Korea's first artist to paint with prosthetic hands. He is called the 2 million volts man who lost his arms from an accident while working as an electrical technician. He began painting by fixing brushes on his prosthetic hands and gained recognition through his chinese ink sketches. We meet with him at a croquis competitions to discuss the fine line between ability and disability, and the hope that blooms within.
