Korea's Power Bloggers

In the Republic of Korea, 75% of the entire population is connected via Internet. Korea's first blogging services were released to the public in 2002, and over the past decade blogs have become the hotspots of user-created content in all fields. The blogs that influenced all of Korean society during the 2008 candlelight protests have now evolved to impact even the most ordinary aspects of everyday lives. We look at the history of blogs in Korea, the changes they've created and power bloggers-the people who made it all happen.

<Kim Jeong-hwan, Media Mongu, leader of one-man media>

Kim Jeong-hwan is at the forefront of news blogging in Korea. He is the textbook example of one-man media, personally witnessing breaking news, deciding what articles to write, creating videos and distributing information alone. His blog, which describes everything from the latest controversy to ordinary idiosyncrasies, powerfully demonstrates both the influence and history of Korean blogging. We followed this media power blogger as he created change through blogging.

<The double life of fashion power blogger, You Jin>

You Jin has been leading an ordinary life for the past 10 years, doing administrative work. But when she clocks out, her life becomes anything but ordinary. She is first on the guest lists of A-list beauty and fashion events and constantly approached by celebrities of the fashion world who are eager to speak with her. She is not a celebrity, but she leads a privileged life. You Jin shows us the social status power bloggers in Korea have achieved.

<Kim Hui-seong, a 20-something power blogger-turned-CEO who dreams of globalizing tteok>

A young college student who went to New York to learn about bread came back to Korea with the hopes of globalizing Korea's traditional rice cakes, tteok. Hoping to popularize and ultimately globalize tteok, Kim Hui-seong began posting tteok recipes on her blog and rose to power bloggerdom. After years of working as a cookbook author and a tteok-class lecturer, she recently opened her own store in Samcheong-dong, Seoul. We learn how she went from power blogger to businesswoman.

<Jang Jin-taek, the car blogger who suggests wise spending>

There are more than 18 million registered cars in Korea, and the streets of Seoul are always congested. In an auto market with limited demand and limitless options, online content plays a crucial role in consumers' decision-making processes. We meet Jang Jin-taek, the man behind the #1 Motor Blog, to see firsthand the process of creating a test-drive video and to discover the secret to his blog's success. With the consumption market becoming polluted with excess advertising, we spotlight the influential role honest informers like Jang Jin-taek can play in the Korean economy.

<Kim Eun-su, a messenger of Korean foods and restaurant power blogger>

Kim Eun-su is a high school senior who chose blogging over studying. Her entire family worried about her future, but her passion for blogging rewarded her with nationwide recognition and acceptance to the university of her choice. As a power blogger, she also participates in a TV program that introduces restaurants and foods in Jeonju. We follow her as she blogs and informs the world about the foods of Jeonju.
