The Founding Mothers of Korea

During Korea's struggle for independence, one group of freedom fighters sought liberty away from the limelight, and often covertly. They were Korea's women.
Jeong Jeong-hwa, considered the godmother of the Provisional Government, raised funds for independence. Gwon Gi-ok was the first Korean female pilot who volunteered to combat Japanese forces. Park Ja-hye, the wife of a freedom fighter, became one in her own right as she started a resistance organization of nurses.

On the 65th anniversary of Korean independence, we commemorate these and other women who gave of themselves for their country and became the founding mothers of Korea.
