From a devastated nation 60 years ago to a medical superpower
After the Korean War, Korea needed help from the world's medical powers. Six decades later, Korea's medical technologies have achieved global recognition in clinical medicine, with many of them being regarded as the best of the best in the world. How was Korea able to become a medical superpower in such a short period of time?

Medical tourism, the cash cow of 21st century
In 2011, some 80,000 medical tourists visited Korea, up 36 percent from 2009. This year, more foreign patients are expected to visit Korea to receive health care. In 2013, medical tourism revenues are expected to surpass 840 million dollars. More than 32 percent of medical tourists are from the U.S., 19.4 percent are from China and 16.8 percent are from Japan. Medical tourists from various parts of the globe choose Korea to mend their health problems. Next year, their number is predicted to reach 200,000, bringing in 840 million dollars in revenues from shopping and tourism as well. Medical tourism has emerged as a lucrative revenue source for Korea.

Foreign doctors learning Korean medical technologies
A growing number of foreign doctors apply for the one-year training course offered by the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare. Applicants face fierce competition, while interest in medical colleges in Korea continues to soar. As a world leader in robotic surgery, Korea has also achieved the world's highest level in living donor liver transplantation and many other medical techniques. Even doctors from industrialized countries come to Korea to learn.
