Spirit Carved by the Edge of a Knife
The world's oldest woodblock, Mugu Jeonggwang Daedarani Gyeong sutra, and the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Haeinsa Temple are a record of the scriptures of Buddhism. By the Joseon Dynasty, however, the Confucian printing woodblocks flourished in place of Buddhist scripture woodblocks. These were private compilations of scholars' accomplishments published after the scholars' death. Their descendants and disciples went through intense discussions regarding the moral and intellectual value of the works as they edited and organized the publications. More than just private records of scholars, the Confucian printing woodblocks are a collective work verified and acknowledged by the intellectuals over the years.
