Furthermore, learn more about the belief and practice of the Catholic Church that gave people the strength to withstand hardship in the midst of crises.

Part 1: Dreaming of a New World

In the unstable social order of the latter period of Joseon Dynasty, a group of intellectuals found a new ideology to reform the society through Catholicism. Lee Byuk, Kim Bum-woo, Kwon Chul-sin, Kwon Il-sin, Jung Yak-jong and others scholars of their time studied Western culture and accepted Catholicism as their religion and started to preach its gospel. Catholicism, in which everyone is considered equal, quickly embedded into the lives of the weary people. However, they were cruelly oppressed by the ruling class. Despite the countless sacrifices of martyrs, Catholicism continued to spread in the country. It established the Joseon Parish and fostered first Korean priests Kim Dae-gun and Choi Yang-up. As the cultural doors opened, the idea of human respect, freedom and equality started to be cultivated in the people through the efforts of the Catholic monastic order, missionaries, and followers.
