On January 26, leading global TV stations in Korea and China hosted a discussion while the relationship between Korea and China still remains strained. Arirang TV, Korea's leading global broadcast network, collaborated with CGTN (formerly CCTV World), a Chinese network launched to enhance China's influence in the world by broadcasting news from the Chinese perspective.
Through the program, the participants held a heated discussion on issues such as THAAD and North Korean Nuclear weapon problems, on which the two countries have opposing views. The discussion was hosted by anchors Moon Conn-young from Arirang News Center and Zou Yue from CGTN. Each station also invited experts to participate in the dialogue.[▶Link to Video]
Arirang TV invited Lee Doo-won, Prof. of Economics at Yonsei University while CGTN's guest was Teng Jianqun, Senior Researcher from CIIS (China Institute of International Studies).
Mr. Teng stated on the program that THAAD has negatively impacted the Korea-China relationship and even the economy because businessmen are feeling the tension. He also emphasized that the problem of THAAD is between China and the US. However, Prof. Lee commented that China's efforts to switch the focus of its economy from exports to domestic trade are the cause of the decrease in trade volume and that it is too early to determine whether that decrease is a long-term trend.
Prof. Lee also emphasized that China holds the key to solving the North Korean nuclear problem in terms of economy, politics and security. Mr. Teng refuted this by saying that China no longer wields such a strong influence over North Korea as it did in the past. CGTN's anchor, Mr. Zou commented that Korea, China and the US all oppose North Korea's nuclear program while Ms. Moon mentioned that many countries expect China to play a larger role in resolving the North Korean nuclear problem although they are not asking China to be solely responsible.
