NASA to crash spacecraft into asteroid Updated: 2021-11-25 08:32:08 KST

NASA on Tuesday launched a spacecraft that must ultimately crash to succeed, in order to test the world's first planetary defense system, designed to deflect an asteroid from a potential doomsday collision with Earth.
The DART spacecraft, short for Double Asteroid Redirection Test, will fly under the guidance of NASA's flight directors until the final hours of its trip, before controls will be handed over to an autonomous on-board navigation system.
The space craft will then crash into an asteroid, altering its trajectory with sheer kinetic force, to nudge the space boulder just enough off course to keep Earth out of harm's way.
DART's target is an asteroid "moonlet" the size of a football stadium, in a binary asteroid system called "Didymos", the Greek word for twin.
