S. Korea, Russia FMs agree on need for early resumption of talks with N. Korea Updated: 2021-10-28 11:56:37 KST

The two foreign ministers from South Korea and Russia have agreed on the need to resume talks with North Korea in order to continue the Korean Peninsula peace process.
At a press conference after their meeting in Moscow on Wednesday, Seoul's foreign minister once again asked for Russia's "constructive role" for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, calling Moscow an "important partner."

"We have agreed to closely communicate and cooperate at various levels for the restart of the Korean Peninsula peace process as soon as possible. We have exchanged opinions on various cooperation measures for the early resumption of talks with the North."

The Russian foreign minister said they had discussed the situation on the Peninsula in detail, stressing the need for the resumption of dialogue by "all related parties", possibly meaning the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Russia and Japan.

"We believe that a diplomatic solution should be possible and that talks should be resumed by all parties concerned. We need to ensure that no factors intervene that would lead to increased tensions."

A high-level official reportedly said Russian officials have also shown support for the Korean government's end-of-war declaration proposal.

As for Seoul-Moscow ties, they have agreed to further expand relations in trade and the economy, and continue to cooperate in nine key sectors, including energy, infrastructure and shipbuilding.
They have also agreed to expand cooperation in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chung added they have agreed to work toward a visit to South Korea by Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as the pandemic situation gets under control.
Chung and Lavrov also attended a cultural event on Wednesday commemorating 30 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
