Taiwan formally applies to join CPTPP just days after China's application Updated: 2021-09-23 07:07:47 KST

Taiwan has submitted an application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, a free trade deal designed to liberalize trade and investment among Pacific Rim economies.
The decision, likely to be opposed by Beijing, comes a matter of days after China filed its application.
Think tanks in Taiwan had reportedly suggested the island should join first to prevent China from blocking it.
To officially become members, both China and Taiwan need unanimous approval from all eleven member countries.
