White House says call with French President Macron was 'friendly' Updated: 2021-09-23 06:29:38 KST

White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters on Wednesday, that U.S. President Joe Biden's call with French President Emmanuel Macron lasted 30 minutes, and was friendly.

"The tone of the call, it was friendly, it was one where we're hopeful and the president is hopeful, this is a step in returning to normal in a long, important abiding relationship that the United States has with France. It was about 30 minutes long. As we noted in the readout, and as you said, it was extensive."

The call comes as France recalled its ambassadors from the U.S. and Australia last week, as it accused President Biden of "stabbing them in the back" after Australia ditched a 40-billion dollar defense contract with France for the purchase of submarines, and opted for U.S. submarines instead.
In a joint statement issued after the phone call, the two leaders agreed to launch in-depth consultations to rebuild trust, and to meet in Europe at the end of October.
The call was requested by Washington, in an attempt to mend ties.
