S. Korea develops AI vehicle without driver's seat Updated: 2021-06-28 13:43:55 KST

With just a tap of a finger, a shuttle bus parked at a different building drives itself towards the caller. This shuttle bus does not have a driver's seat and comfortably fits four passengers.

Although the maximum speed is currently limited to 25 kilometers per hour, the vehicle can decide by itself when to change lanes and automatically stops when someone crosses the street.
If the car ahead abruptly stops, the shuttle bus also stops and can even swerve around the car ahead with a simple order from the passenger.

Currently, the vehicle is at the start of the fourth level of vehicle autonomy, meaning it shows high driving automation and can judge situations by itself without a driver. The vehicle will drive itself ten times everyday around the complex and learn how to deal with unexpected situations. The research team expects to complete its automation technology by 2027.

"This is a vehicle with automation AI software that can respond to or avoid unexpected or dangerous situations."

The shuttle also showcases high-speed technology and displays developed by the institute. On this transparent OLED display, passengers can enjoy high quality information and videos with VR and AR experiences. A world where we can leave the driving up to the vehicle and just enjoy the journey could be coming very soon.
