COVID-19 delta variant becoming globally dominant strain: WHO Updated: 2021-06-19 09:32:29 KST

The highly contagious COVID-19 variant delta is becoming the globally dominant strain of the disease.
That's according to the World Health Organization's chief scientist on Friday, citing its "significantly increased transmissibility."
Dr. Soumya Swaminathan( ) said delta is around 60 percent more transmissible than the U.K variant or alpha, which was also more contagious than the original COVID-19 strain.
The delta has now spread to more than 80 countries and continuously mutates as it spreads across borders.
The U.S. CDC said earlier that the variant makes up 10 percent of new cases in the U.S., a sharp increase from the previous week's 6 percent.
