South Korea's Supreme Court has confirmed a suspended jail sentence for Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin for bribery in the massive influence-peddling scandal that led to the ouster of former President Park Geun-hye.
Shin was initially sentenced to two years and six months in prison in February 2018 for giving some six million U.S. dollars in bribes to a close aide of the former president to win support for his duty-free business.
Shin's sentence will be suspended for four years.
The court's ruling was based on the assumption that Shin paid the bribes out of fear that his business could be affected negatively if he refused.
Following the decision, Lotte Group released a statement saying that it will become a trustworthy company that contributes to the nation and society.
