Seoul to upgrade smart city services with 50,000 IoT sensors Updated: 2019-03-27 19:00:55 KST

The Korean capital of Seoul is planning a major upgrade for its city infrastructure.
The Seoul government announced this month it will install 50-thousand IoT sensors in public areas, across all 25 districts to improve major aspects of urban life.
The smart sensors will be used to manage and control transport information, wind speed, energy systems, and monitor of the floating population.
With high fine dust density levels continuing to cause concern, the new smart city solutions will provide more location-specific data on dust pollution levels.
Also, Seoul aims to bolster public health and safety, by setting up a CCTV data sharing system between districts, the police and emergency services.
This is expected to help authorities prevent crime and disasters, and respond more effectively to crises.
Seoul has been the world's number one e-government for seven consecutive years for its e-governance system and smart services for its citizens.
The most notable services include a mobile voting app on city policies as well as open data initiatives, that have encouraged start-ups and citizens to create useful services of their own.

"First is the efficiency. How the city government delivers time and cost-effective services to its citizens. Second of all is the transparency. Because the city government has provided a platform on providing an authentic floor of information to its citizens. Third point is citizens' participation."

Seoul plans to update such widely-used public services, and resolve urban problems, introducing AI chatbots and IoT based apps.

"The core of a smart city is data. By analyzing movements in the city and of the citizens through big data, we can develop and provide customized services."

The city has allocated one.two billion U.S. dollars to the overall smart city plan.
Officials hope to realise the envisioned "data capital" by 2022.
