Separated Families Reunite after 65 Years
Families torn apart by the Korean War were finally reunited after 65 years.
Since 2000, the two Koreas had held 20 face-to-face reunions and 7 video reunions until 2015.
The family reunions were resumed for the first time in nearly three years, as agreed in the Apr. 27 Panmunjom Declaration.
Seoul sent 89 people and Pyongyang 83 people for the two rounds of reunions.
The oldest participant, 101-year old Baek Sung-kyu, met his daughter-in-law and a granddaughter.
89-year old Yu Kwan-sik was reunited with his daughter, who was unborn at the time of war. A wave of emotions filled the room, as the participants met their relatives.
"Meaningful reunions filled with the warmth of family love"
- Pak Yong-il, Vice Chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland
"The reunions are significant in that they honor the Panmunjom Declaration"
The tearful reunions captured national and international headlines.
After a three-day long event, the families said a heartbreaking goodbye to each other, not knowing if they would ever see each other again.
So far, only 2,000 South Koreans have taken part in the family reunions, with over 50,000 still waiting for their turn.
With President Moon making the expansion of their reunions a top priority, it may be only a matter of time before their tears go away.
