Korea Celebrates 73rd Anniversary of National Liberation Day
Every year on Aug. 15, the two Koreas celebrate the liberation from Japanese colonial rule.
How did Korea's National Liberation Day originate?
The Korean Peninsula endured decades of Japanese colonial rule, following Japan's forced annexation of Korea in 1910.
Many Korean independence fighters including young students took to the streets in demonstrations for independence.
On Aug. 15, 1945, Korea was finally liberated from 35 years of Japanese colonial rule.
Amid a conciliatory mood on the Korean Peninsula, this year's 73rd anniversary of Korea's liberation is more meaningful than ever.
The two Koreas are expected to hold reunions of war-separated families around National Liberation Day. It will be the first family reunion in three years.
The resumption of family reunions was one of the agreements set out in the Panmunjom Declaration. There will be 100 participants from each side of the border.
The first family reunions also took place around National Liberation Day, following the first inter-Korean summit in 2000.
National Liberation Day has historically brought the two Koreas together. We hope one day a unified Korea will celebrate the holiday.
