Remembering May 18th Democracy Movement
The melody of the pro-democracy anthem "March for the Beloved" reverberated at the May 18th National Cemetery in Gwangju last Friday.
The ceremony for the 38th anniversary of the May 18th Democracy Movement was held with over 5,000 people in attendance.
The pro-democracy uprising against the authoritarian military regime took place on May 18, 1980.
In the ensuing government crackdown, more than 4,000 people were killed, injured or went missing.
Thirty-eight years later, the spirit of Gwangju was rekindled during the ceremony.
A female protester who called on Gwangju citizens to take to the streets in 1980 reenacted her speech.
The story of a seven-year-old boy who went missing during the protests was shared with participants.
The atrocities of Gwangju were exposed to the world by foreigners including the late German journalist Jürgen Hinzpeter.
Their wives' presence at the ceremony added more meaning to the event.
But there are still unanswered questions about what happened in Gwangju, such as who first gave the order to open fire on civilians.
“We will not allow the victims to have died in vain” In his speech, Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon vowed that the government will work hard to find the truth.
Only the truth will bring a sense of closure to bereaved family members of the victims.
