President Yoon Suk-yeol vowed to guarantee police neutrality within the police, improve their working conditions, and ensure fair promotion opportunities.
He was speaking at a graduation ceremony of the Central Police Academy on Friday.
"I will raise the basic salary of the police to levels of public security officials' and usher in a plural class system to establish a reasonable personnel system. I will make sure police constables who have worked hard on the front lines of crimes are provided with fair promotion opportunities."
The president also called the agency to separate from outdated practices and establish an internal management system that's transparent and democratic.
Yoon's remarks come amid some public concerns that the Ministry of the Interior's new unit overseeing police operations may infringe upon its neutrality and autonomy.
