China to send troops to Russia to participate in joint military drills involving other countries Updated: 2022-08-18 09:12:49 KST

China says it will send troops to Russia to take part in joint military drills involving numerous other countries including India and Belarus.

Beijing's Defense Ministry explained Wednesday that the decision is not related to the current international and regional situation, in an apparent reference to Moscow's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Rather, it says the exercises are part of an ongoing annual bilateral cooperation agreement.
It further stated that the objective of the drills is to bolster pragmatic and friendly cooperation among the armies of participating countries, while strengthening the ability to respond to various security threats.
