World News: Italy declares state of emergency as drought strikes northern region Updated: 2022-07-05 05:48:02 KST

For a look at the news from around the world, we now turn to our Matthew Ashley standing by at the Arirang newsroom. Good morning.

Good morning.

We begin in Italy, as a drought there has forced the government to declare a state of emergency.

That's right, the measure announced on Monday comes as Italy's longest river has seen its lowest water levels in over 70 years. The 650 kilometer-long River Po, which runs across the north of the country, accounts for around one third of Italy's agricultural production.
But due to the low water levels, sea water has begun seeping inland, damaging crops.
The emergency declarations have been assigned to five regions where the drought is at its worst, while some cities and towns have already implementedwater use restrictions.
Meanwhile in central Italy, Romes Tiber River is becoming increasingly shallow.
According to a state-run research body, overthe past 30 years Italy has received only half the average rainfall.
