The South Korean government has expressed deep regret over North Korea's apparent release of water from a dam near the inter-Korean border without prior notice.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, an official at the Unification Ministry said Pyeongyang appears to have opened the floodgates of the Hwanggang Dam after heavy rainfall.
The official said if this is true, it's regrettable that the North did not inform the South despite it having requested such notice publicly just this week.
The North never responded to that request.
South Korea's military is closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of people in the area and their property.
